Google has unveiled a new tool to calculate the solar viability of rooftops.
‘Project Sunroof’ uses Google Earth imagery to allow anyone to look up their own home and see whether its worth investing in rooftop solar panels.
The software takes into account the shape of roofs, local weather patterns, the position of sun in the sky at different times of year and shade from nearby buildings or trees to calculate how much energy each building can generate and how much money it can save.
Project Sunroof puts Google’s expansive data in mapping and computing resources to use, helping calculate the best solar plan for you. . When you enter your address, Project Sunroof looks up your home in Google Maps and combines that information with other databases to create your personalized roof analysis. Don’t worry, Project Sunroof doesn’t give the address to anybody else unless you ask it to.
It is only working in USA at the moment but you can sign up for notification when it is available in the UK or you can join our newsletter as we will be telling everyone when it is available.
